The 2023 MLB Draft Breakdown

This past week the MLB had its annual Amature draft. One thing we like to do every year is break down the draft by where people were taken. This year there were 20 rounds with 614 guys taken across all levels of College of Baseball and high school.

Now you are here to see the breakdown of the Junior College guys.

At first glance when you look at the draft you see that out of those 614 guys taken 446 were taken from a 4-year university, there were 124 taken from the high school ranks, and 44 were taken from the junior college level. When you look at the percentages. That’s 72.6% taken from 4-year schools, 20.2% taken from High School, and just 7.2% taken from the Junior College Ranks.

Now that does not tell the whole story.

If you take a deeper look and separate the guys who have junior college ties from the straight 4-year guys. Those numbers change dramatically. That changes it to 373 (60.7%) guys taken from 4-year schools, 124 (20.2%) taken from High School, and 117 (19.1%) guys taken who had a junior college tie.

There were 85 different junior colleges from the NJCAA (Div. 1, Div. 2, and Div. 3), the CCCAA, and the NWAC. There were 62 schools that had just 1 guy taken. 15 schools that had 2 taken, 7 schools that had 3 taken, and 1 school that had 4.

The school that had the most guys taken was Wabash Valley with 4. They had CJ Weins taken in the 6th Round by the Red Sox, Josh Timmerman taken by the Brewers in the 16th Round, Connor Oliver taken by the Royals in the 17th Round, and Brian Kalmer taken in the 18th Round by the Cubs.

The schools with 3 guys taken were Central Arizona, Florida SouthWestern, Iowa Western, Miami Dade, Palomar, Panola, and San Jac.

The schools with 2 guys taken were Catawba Valley, Central Florida, Cowley, Crowder, Eastern Oklahoma, McLennan, Niagara, Northwest Mississippi, Polk State, San Joaquin Delta, Southern Idaho, Temple, Tyler, Umpqua, Walters State, and Weatherford.

The Highest guy taken with a Junior College tie was Andrew Walters who was taken by the Guardians with the 62nd pick. He was drafted out of Miami but had spent time at Eastern Florida State.

There were multiple times were there were multiple junior college guys taken in a row. The first time was in the 5th round with the 158th-160th picks, where the Cardinals took Zach Levenson (Seminole State (FL)), the Mets took Zach Thorton (Barton), and the Mariners took Brock Rodden (Seminole State (OK)).

The same thing happened in the 9th round between the picks of 259-261. The Royals took Jacob Widener (Palomar), the Tigers took Hayden Minton (Johnson County), and the Rangers took Quincy Scott (Palomar).

It happened three more times where 3 junior college guys were taken between picks 307-309, 419-421, and 516-518.

In the 14th round there happened to be a stretch of 4 junior college guys taken in a row. With the 411th pick the Rangers took Josh Trentadue (Southern Idaho), with the 412th pick the Rockie took Hunter Mann (Columbia State), with the 413th pick the Marlins took Jack Sellinger

(Southern Nevada), and with the 414th pick the Angels too Zach Joyce (Walters State).

There was a guy with junior college ties in every round from the 3rd round on.
